Fix or Set Up Your Boca Ticket Printer on Mac with the Setup Script
If you have a Mac with a recent update (macOS 27) and your Boca printer is not printing tickets, or you are setting up a Boca printer on this Mac for the first time, you will want to use this setup
What the setup file does
- Finds your Boca printer automatically. You do not need to copy any codes or numbers.
- Creates a printer named Boca on your Mac.
- If you already have a Boca printer set up, it quickly resets it first and asks you to print a test ticket.
- Removes duplicate printer copies, which can cause printing to freeze.
1. Get ready
Check these four things first.
- QZ Tray is running. Look for the green printer icon at the top of your screen. If you do not see it, open QZ Tray from your Applications folder.
- If you do not yet have QZ Tray, please download it from here: https://qz.io/download/
- Load ticket paper in the printer.
- Turn on the printer and plug it directly into your Mac with the USB cable (not through a hub or dock).
2. Open Terminal
Terminal is an app that is already on your Mac.
- Press Command + Space.
- Type Terminal.
- Press Return.
A window with some text opens. That is normal.
3. Paste the setup command
Copy this line, paste it into Terminal, and press Return:
This gets the setup file and starts it. You don't need to download or open anything yourself. The file now guides you.
The first step can take a few moments. The file looks for your printer, and while it does, you will see the message "Looking for your Boca printer." Nothing else appears on screen. That is normal. Please wait and do not close the window. Just read each message and answer when it asks.
When it asks for your password: type your Mac password and press Return. You will not see anything appear as you type. That is normal.
4. What you will see
If this Mac has never had a Boca printer set up
The file finds your printer and sets it up. When you see "Done. The printer "Boca" is ready.", you are finished. Go to step 5.
If you have more than one Boca printer plugged in, you will see a numbered list. Type the number of the printer you want and press Return.
If a Boca printer was already set up
- The file resets it. When it says the reset is done, turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- The file asks you to print one ticket from Ludus and choose the printer named Boca. Then wait. It watches for your ticket for up to 2 minutes, and a dot appears every 10 seconds.
- It then asks: "Did a ticket come out of the printer?"
- Yes: type y and press Return. You are all set.
- No: type n and press Return. The file lists a few things to check (paper, cable, QZ Tray). If that does not help, it offers to set the printer up again from scratch. Type y to do that.
If your ticket gets stuck or never shows up, the file explains what happened and sets the printer up again for you.
5. Print a ticket
- Make sure QZ Tray is running.
- Print a ticket from Ludus and pick Boca as the printer. Pick Boca again even if another printer is already selected. Ludus remembers your old choice, and that printer no longer exists.
- If QZ Tray asks whether to allow Ludus, choose Allow and tick Remember.
If something goes wrong
What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
"No Boca printer was found" | Check that the printer is on and plugged straight into your Mac with the USB cable. Then paste the setup command again. |
"QZ Tray does not appear to be running" | Open QZ Tray from your Applications folder, then print. |
Nothing prints, no message | Check that QZ Tray is running, there is paper, and you chose Boca in Ludus. Then paste the setup command again. |
You can paste the setup command as many times as you like. It is safe to run again.
Helpful Tips
- Keep only one printer set up for each Boca.
- Leave the printer name as Boca.
- Keep QZ Tray running whenever you print tickets.
- Check that there is paper before you start.
